Nielsen released its mid-year music report on Thursday, showing a surge in streaming and a hefty bump in vinyl sales and making two things abundantly clear: Taylor Swift is unstoppable, and Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk!” probably isn’t going anywhere.
For the period from Dec. 29, 2014 to June 28, 2015, Swift’s 1989 has been the top-selling and most consumed album, moving more than 2 million units. On top of that, four 1989 tracks were in the top 25, each selling more than 1 million units. The album took second, however, in digital album sales. (Drake’s If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late took the top spot.)
1989 also topped vinyl sales, which saw an overall 38 percent bump, with an impressive 33,500 vinyls sold. Sufjan Stevens’ Carrie & Lowell was close behind with 31,700 vinyl sales. (CDs, naturally, didn’t have as much luck, seeing a 10 percent drop in sales.)
Swift didn’t fare as well on the digital songs chart, where “Uptown Funk!” dominated. In addition to leading online streams, the infectious track was also the most-played radio song.
